Why pay money for sleveless T-shirts when there is a wardrobe of unused T-shirts that can be made into sleeveless t-shirts for free? Here is how to make a T-shirt into a sleeveless T-shirt.
Put on the T-shirt and see if it would look good as a sleeveless T-shirt. Decide how it would best be cut.
Lay the t-shirt flat and make a hole in the sleeve with scissors. Insert one of the blades into the hole and cut around the sleeve, on side at a time. For the professional look, keep the seam on the t-shirt. For the comfort, cut the seam off with the sleeve. Repeat with other sleeve. Keep the sleeves for future projects.
Tips
- If the shirt is baggy, mark with chalk where the cut will look best. With baggy shirts, it is usually an inch away from the seam, towards the collar. That cloth usually curls over inwards.
- Sleeveless shirts, although generally a guys' style, can be also a girl's style. For girls' shirts, the shirt should not be too loose and be sure to make sure it looks good without the sleeves before cutting; as there are multiple styles of girl's t-shirts and not all cut well.
- If the armhole is going to be too deep, use the sleeve to fill it in. Do this by making the pinhole at the top of the sleeve. When you are two-thirds down the sleeve, angle out into the sleeve. Then figure out how much of the sleeve needs to stay to become the side of the shirt. A triangle will need to be removed from the sleeve remnant, with the sleeve's seam defining the middle of that triangle. For girl's sleeveless shirts, this method can be very helpful.
Warnings
- Baggy t-shirts tend to have gaping armholes.
- Cutting the seam off of the shirt causes armholes to be larger and also leaves the armholes more likely to rip.
- cutting sleeves in half does not work because the cloth curls over outwards, unless that effect is desired.
